Being Mindful with Planters

Updated: May 7, 2020

I finally got around to placing and installing my new wall planters. I’m always concerned when using metal planters because they rust very easily and quickly. I chose to plant my hoyas in them because hoyas prefer dryer soil and less water means a smaller chance of rusting. With their epiphytic nature, I can use smaller doses of water often and they’ll be fine versus a plant that needs an evenly moist soil like many ferns.

When choosing planters for your plants, it is always important to take into consideration your watering habits as well as your plants' watering needs. If you know you are heavy handed with water, it is best to place all plants in terracotta, cement, or some variant of clay pots. The porosity of these types of pots will alleviate chances of root rot. Water logged plants are also more susceptible to developing pest problems. Ceramic planters are very popular. They are beautiful and also lend to more elaborate designs, just be mindful and make sure to use a very well draining medium for the plants you place in them and that the planter has a drainage hole. Drainage holes are yours and your plants' best friend. If you are someone who forgets to water plants, then using a peatier medium with ceramic planters can support your plant during their handmade droughts!

My patio is east facing, which means I only get morning sun and a little midday sun in one corner. For this reason, I use a well draining soil for all of my plants no matter what type of planter they are in and only water when they visibly need it. As I mentioned earlier, ferns need an evenly moist soil. Which for me, because of my watering habits, means that I only place them in ceramic planters or glossed clay pots that do not have a drainage hole. It helps retain water and reduces how often I need to water my ferns. Some plants, like African violets, are prone to leaf rot because of their growing habit. To avoid this, it is recommended to place your Violets in planters where bottom watering is possible. This usually involves some type of porous material and a saucer or tray that stays filled with water. There are many ways to accomplish this. Here's a video to help. #patiodecor #hoyas #plants #pots #wallplanters
